Brave Perth ladies bow out of the cup

-

Jeanfield Swifts Ladies exited the SEE Scottish Women’s Cup to Glasgow City - but head coach Jason McCrindle was full of praise for his side’s quarter final efforts.

While the Perth squad went down 6-0 to last season’s runners-up - a team who regularly compete in the Champions League - plenty of positives were taken.

McCrindle said:“There isn’t a bigger challenge than facing a side like Glasgow City in the cup and the girls can be proud of how they played. We competed for 90 minutes and they gave 100 percent effort.

“We had targets at the start of the season and reaching the quarter final again was one of those and I can only praise the girls for achieving that.”

The sides had met back in February in the first round of the League Cup and the weekend encounter offered a chance to see how far Swifts had come.

They were finding it difficult to breach a well-organised Glasgow defence and goalkeeper, but Eilidh McIntyre and Ellie Cowie did have sights at goal.

The visitors lifted the pace of the game, however, and raced to a 4-0 half-time lead before adding another couple after the break. Swifts Star Erin Thatcher wins the ball back for the Perth side

Corrie McIlravey-Davidson produced some fine saves to keep the score down, along with some strong play from the Swifts defence and midfield.

Hannah Clark and Niamh Irvine were introduced for the hosts, aged only 15 and 17, but they slotted in nicely to produce a composed showing.
