Community council is back

- Rachel Clark

Members of a Perth community were delighted this week to see the return of the North Inch and Muirton Community Council.

After almost three years in abeyance, the community council was officially reestablished this week, with the first meeting held in The Rookery on Wednesday, October 4.

New committee members were elected at the meeting, and the new community council hope to meet once a month from now on.

A spokesperson for the new North Inch and Muirton Community Council said: “Wednesday, October 4 saw the community council hold its first official meeting at the community flat in The Rookery.

“Councillors were duly elected from the members present to their designated positions and the newly elected chairperson congratulated the new community council on its achievements and wished them all a long and successful future.

“All members agreed reestablishing the community council was long overdue.

“Thank you to everyone that helped make this happen and their support throughout. You are welcome to attend the meetings to be held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Muirton community flat at 3 The Rookery, Perth.”

The move was welcomed by city centre councillor Andrew Parrott, who hopes the community council will be able to get involved in a number of issues currently affecting the area.

Cllr Parrott said: “The community council has been formally re-established after two or three years in abeyance. I am very much in favour of community councils being re-established wherever there is enthusiasm for them, and I like to think I played a role in reestablishing this particular community council.

“Where we have a community council, they are useful and positive, particularly this one, and I would like to encourage other community councils in abeyance to follow suit.

“I hope the North Inch and Muirton Community Council works to express community views such as in the school review currently affecting North Muirton, St Ninian’s and Balhousie primary schools, and express community views such as onstreet car parking in the local area and that sort of thing.”

The next public meeting of the North Inch and Muirton Community Council will be held in the Muirton community flat on Wednesday, November 1 and all are welcome to attend.
