Takeaway extension bid is turned down

Retrospective application met with refusal by council

- Paul Cargill

Council planning bosses have skewered a Perth kebab shop’s retrospective application to cover an extension and other changes to the shop that have already been completed.

Perth and Kinross Council has refused an application from the owner of Marmaris Kebab House in South Methven Street which would have “regularised” work that has already taken place to create a larger waiting area for queueing customers.

The application would have also covered new signage now emblazoned across the front of the takeaway that glows pink at night to attract passing customers.

Assessing the application and the standard of the work that has been carried out PKC case officer Sean Panton was unimpressed with the new shopfront and decided the application should be refused.

He said in his delegated report: “I do not consider the extension of the existing unit to look out of place on the streetscene. I do, however, have concerns in relation to the design of the shopfront as this will negatively impact upon the Perth Central Conservation Area and the host building, which is Category C Listed.

“The selected materials and design are not appropriate or sensitive to the surrounding environment and look out of place. Whilst it is noted on the submitted plans that one of the doors is to be removed, on conducting a site visit this door has been blocked in and does not respect the values of the host building or Conservation Area.

“This is not considered to be of a high quality and is not considered to be supportable in planning terms as this will compromise the character and integrity of the area.”

A council spokesperson commented: “As with the refusal of any planning application, there is a right of appeal against the refusal of the application which would go before the Local Review Body.

“The applicant may decide to reapply if he can address the reasons for refusal. An Marmaris Kebab House, on Perth’s South Methven Street enforcement notice would only be served if the matter remained unresolved.”
