Roddy: I’ve definitely played my last game!

-

St Johnstone legend Roddy Grant can hang up his boots with a smile on his face.

The Perth favourite (51) rolled back the years to net against Dundee in Dave Mackay’s testimonial on Friday night.

Grant, who is awaiting a knee replacement in December, admits scoring at McDiarmid Park is always a special moment.

But he says this cameo appearance is likely to be his last.

Grant said:“John O’Neil said after the game that we should do this more often. But it’s alright for him being 46 - I’m 51!

“It would be good to do every so often but I’m now retired. I think that is me hanging up the boots now.

“It was certainly nice to get a goal but my body is in bits now. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t expect to get as many minutes as I got.

“It’s funny because your head thinks you can still do it, but your legs are saying it’s not possible.

“It was great to be on the pitch with the old players I played with and also the younger guys.

“My legs are very sore. I’m getting a knee replacement in December so it was my last hurrah before that.

“I was actually due to get the replacement a month ago but it’s been put back. That gave me the opportunity to play.

“It was a great night and I was delighted to be able to play for Cuptie.”

Grant’s cheeky chipped finish left goalkeeper Rab Douglas with no chance.

“In those situations the goalkeeper makes your mind up,”he said.“I didn’t panic and always knew what I was doing.

“It’s always good to score goals, especially at McDiarmid Park, so that is me happy.”
