SWIFTS DELIVER THE RIGHT RESULT

-

Jeanfield Swifts manager Ross Gunnion got the reaction from his players that he was after on Saturday.

The Perth side recorded a 3-0 Super League victory against Sauchie with goals from Rhys Davies, Gary Fergus and Jamie Reid.

Boss Gunnion had called for a determined showing from his squad prior to kick-off and he was delighted with the response.

“I was pleased with the performance and obviously the result,”Gunnion explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.

“I said last week that I felt there was an intensity and determination within the squad that had maybe not been there the last few weeks.

“That was evident in the game and we competed well from the outset.

“We battled and scrapped for the first 25 minutes without really playing too much football, but it gave us a platform to go from.

Once we got our noses in front we controlled the game.

“We could have scored even more than we did but winning 3-0 and keeping a clean sheet was very pleasing.

“Credit goes to the whole team on the defensive side as from front to back we pressed well.”

The plan for Jeanfield is to now build on their comfortable win.

Gunnion explained: “This league is so tough that week to week any team can beat the next.

“But if we replicate the hard work we put in on Saturday then we will win more than we lose.”

NORTH DIVISION

Luncarty continued their push towards the summit of the North Division on Saturday with a comfortable victory against Arbroath Vics.

The Bleachers ran out 5-1 winners at Brownlands Park to consolidate their second place position, only two points behind leaders DundeeViolet.

Goals at the weekend from Kieran Donald (2), Dale Smart, Callum Kirkaldy and Richard Doig secured the triumph.

Assistant boss Richie Montgomery highlighted the importance of keeping the momentum at the club going.

“It was another test, even though the scoreline suggests it was not,”Montgomery said.

“We didn’t really get going first half but did have a spell for 10 minutes where we effectively won the game.

“Second half we conceded a penalty and gave them a lifeline but soon after got a fourth and fifth goal to end the game.

“We were never really in any trouble even though we didn’t play as well as we could.

“All in all it was pleasing to get three points and keep the run going.

“We had a tough opening five games, playing probably the top four teams so it’s the teams after these games we have beaten comfortably.

“It is always pleasing to win games no matter how the scoreline goes and also good to get a decent run going.

“We now can’t get complacent as we have dropped points before due to this a few weeks back.”

Coupar Angus produced one of the results of the day by defeating Perthshire rivals Kinnoull 2-1.

The Foxhall Park men, who ended the game with 10 men, nudged ahead on the stroke of half-time courtesy of a Tom Casey header.

Kinnoull had missed a penalty earlier in the contest but Darren Gray levelled with 20 minutes remaining.

With Ross Nicholson ordered off for the hosts, they faced an uphill battle. But Casey nodded home a late winner.

Coupar boss Logan McConachie said:“Saturday’s game was a great example of how good our squad can be when we are all working together as a team.

“We were absolutely delighted to get three points against quality opposition, especially when we were down to 10 men.

“We still limited the chances that they had which was really pleasing.

“It was vital to bounce back. The loss last week was unacceptable as we’ve got aspirations to be higher up the league.

“Hopefully we can emulate this performance in future games.”

It was Scone Thistle who came out on top in the other Perthshire derby at the weekend.

The Jags defeated Blairgowrie 3-0 at Davie Park with Ross Mitchell, Jamie Ayton and Charlie Fertacz on target.

Their only disappointment of the day was when Fertacz received a red card late in the game.
