Against gender-based violence

Perth and Kinross Violence Against Women Partnershi­p are hosting‘16 days of activism’ next month to raise awareness of gender-based violence.

The global movement takes place from Saturday, November 25, until Sunday, December 10.

The opening day is Internatio­nal Day for the Eliminatio­n of Violence Against Women, with the project concluding on Human Rights Day.

A number of events and activities have been organised across the region to flag up a project which aims to raise awareness of and challenge violence against women and girls all over the world.

John Evans, co-ordinator of the Violence Against Women Partnershi­p, is keen to get as many people as possible involved.

He said:“We have a lot of things going on in the run-up to Christmas with the 16 days of activism. It’s been going in Perth and Kinross for two years now.

“It is a global movement, focusing on challengin­g all kinds of violence against women and girls, ranging from female genital mutilation to sexual assault, and it is relevant to

The first public event of the 16 days will be an ‘Images of Women’workshop at St John the Baptist Church on Princes Street in Perth on Saturday, November 25, from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

The event will see Kathy Galloway, the former head of Christian Aid Scotland, giving a speech and leading workshops on how women and men can get involved in the drive for gender justice.

This is followed by a film night on Monday, November 27 at the Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy from 6.30pm.
