Coupar Angus

Abbey Church The service on Sunday was conducted by Rev Andy Graham. The choir sang the introit and this was followed by the hymn Christ is Made the Sure Foundation. The Bible lessons were read by Andy from the King James Bible, and were Philippians Two, verses 1-11 and Matthew chapter 21, verses 23-32. Gathering the children at the front, Andy asked them how they would let people know what they were feeling without actually speaking. There followed a number of different facial expressions, emphasising that actions speak louder than words. Reflecting on his school days, he recalled being easily distracted in class and losing the thread of the lesson. Jesus said people must listen carefully to the will of God and do what he tells them. Attending church and understanding theology are not enough. People must act on these teachings of fellowship, unity, joy and love. As a church the congregation is part of a wider community and members must let others see the difference Jesus makes in their lives. Musical offerings by organist Austin Wilkie included Toreador’s Song from Carmen, Prelude No 7 by Chopin, arranged for the organ by Austin, and Fugue in D Major by JS Bach. Sunday services in the Abbey church are held, from 11.15am to 12.15pm, followed by refreshments. Due to upgrading of the heating system, there will be no prayer group or Bible study this week. These will resume on Wednesday, October 25, at 2pm and 7.15pm respectively. Communion will be held at the church on Sunday, October 29. The next friendly Friday coffee event is on Friday, November 3, from 1.30pm to 3pm. Autumn fair The Abbey Church autumn fair on Saturday raised £868 for church funds. Organisers thanked everyone who supported this event by baking, serving, manning stalls and those who went along on the day. Heritage association The association meets on the first Friday of each month, at 7.30pm. As the bowling club has closed down, the new venue for the group is the St Anne’s Church hall on Forfar Road. Pride of Place The group is organising a community crocus planting on the Common this Saturday, from 10am.
