Scorers were Robinson penalty (55), Swan (77), and Robinson (85). The Kennedy brothers were absent due to working, Houston was on holiday, and Cameron and MacDonald were injured. Back in the team were Clark, Campbell, Swan and Thain. The team was: Baxter, Clark, Robertson, Coleman, Berry, Robinson, Carr, Swan, Doig, Campbell, Clark, Thain and Hall. It was a good start from Vale and with a bit of luck they could have been four up early on. The home keeper did well to get to shots from Campbell, Doig, Clark and Robinson. Coupar looked dangerous on the break, but Vale’s defence stood firm. Slack marking at a corner allowed the home centre half to head the first goal in after 25 minutes. Vale’s Doig had a great chance just after, but his effort slipped past the far post. The half-time score was 1-0. Vale should have been well in the lead, but good keeping and chances scorned saw them in a poor position. Had it not been for some good and well timed tackling from the defence, it could have been worse. Berry in particular had two great tackles to prevent sure goals. Coupar Angus had a good start to the second period. Again though, Vale’s back line of Baxter, Clark, Coleman, Robertson and Berry, along with deep lying mid fielder Carr, did not look in any danger. Vale drew level when Robinson picked up a good ball from Campbell. He was knocked over in the box for a penalty which Robinson took himself and scored. Coupar seemed to be tiring and drifting out of the game as Vale applied pressure. The speed of Doig, Robinson and Swan caused lots of problems for the home defence and each had a chance to score. As the game went on, Vale’s midfield had the upper hand. This allowed them and the defence to pick their passes more carefully and from both Swan and Robinson scored almost identical goals and excellent passes, with pace and a good finish. Vale then played out time comfortably, giving the substitutes Thain and Hall a run out in place of Clark and Doig. It was an excellent result for Vale, built on a solid defence. Baxter only had one save to make, but he read the game well and came off his line to make a difference. Robertson and Coleman played together for the first time in the centre and were excellent. Campbell played his first game for a while and was at his best. Carr did a good job in central midfield and was unlucky not to score with a thunderbolt that the keeper managed somehow to get a hand to. Wide players Doig and Robinson caused problems to the full backs especially in the second half. In the same period, Swan’s broke from the middle with pace and created chances. A pleasing three goals and three points away from home without some of their senior players could not be considered a bad result. The younger players took up the challenge set them by management to show what they were capable of and no one was let down. Man of the match had a few contenders, not least Matt Robertson in his first game at centre half. The award went to his central partner Steven Coleman who had another outstanding game. Tomorrow Vale will be at home to Vale of Earn from Crieff in a cup game with a 1.30pm start. Community council Pitlochry and
