Concerns for future of ‘vital’ service

-

is among the many people demanding to know why the subPost Office within Craigie’s Corner Shop in the city’s Abbot Street has been closed for at least the last six weeks.

The Scottish Liberal Democrat says he is putting pressure on the Post Office to explain the unannounced closure and reveal when it expects the key community asset to reopen amid rising anger among residents who have come to rely on its services.

Yesterday a spokesperson for the Post Office would only say that the sub-post office was closed for “operational reasons” and that it was “working hard” to restore services “as soon as possible”.

Councillor Wilson told the PA: “I

wrote right away to the Post Office on the matter – this closure was not notified at all to the public or indeed local councillors.

“The closure unacceptable.

“A lot of people rely on this post office for local postal services. There is no other easy alternative facility.

“The Post Office have replied to say they are working to resolve the matter.

“I don’t think that is enough detail and we need to hear from them urgently when the Post Office will reopen.

“I will continue to campaign to have this vital facility reinstated for the local community.”

And newly-announced Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for the Perth City South by-election, Liz Barrett, added: “The public and Craigie residents have been left completely in the dark.

“There was no advance notice nor any indication of how long residents will have to suffer without any service.

“Craigie residents deserve better from the Post Office.

“I am seeking urgent clarification from the Post Office as to when it will re open.

“I have written to, and will be working hard with local councillor Willie Wilson, to ensure that the services are reinstated and maintained into the future.”

Yesterday a Post Office spokesperson explained to the PA: “We are committed to maintaining a Post Office service to customers in Craigie and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure, which is due to operational reasons.

“We are working hard to restore services to the area as soon as possible and in the meantime, customers can access Post Office services at any Post office, including our Perth, Oakbank and Muirton branches.” is
