Perth’s St John’s Kirk was lit up for various events last year Perth and Kinross Council has hired the team behind Blackpool’s brilliant illuminations to light up Perth’s landmarks.

Lancashire-based LITE Ltd has been brought on board to brighten up the city’s buildings and festoon its streetscapes with kaleidoscopic colours as part of the local authority’s ‘Perth City of Light Action Plan’, published last year.

The council has previously stated the aim of the £12m project is to “raise the standard of public realm in the city centre, creating a series of exciting gateways and spaces which...promotes the [city’s] cultural heritage and natural assets, such as the River Tay and Inches.”

According to a contract award LITE will now be responsible for:

• the provision of architectural/ feature lighting design including conceptual art, draft and detailed drawings along with electrical design and development services to assess and prepare costs, and contract documentation, and

• the supply, installation and maintenance responsibilities of the approved detailed designs, be that the designer or a suitably qualified contractor who can undertake the provision of lighting and electrical services.

LITE’s David Robertson said: “We are looking forward to demonstrating the impact that modern lighting technology can have in our city centres.”

A council spokesperson said: “One of the key ambitions of the City Plan is to develop the city’s cultural offering and its night-time economy in particular.

“Therefore, both effective functional and decorative lighting of the public realm and key landmarks are seen as central to the ambition of raising Perth as a location of choice, driving increased visitation and dwell time in the city centre and growth.”

Ten other firms submitted applications for the contract.
