Ignorance over state of roads
Work carried out previously to roads in Perthshire Dear Editor Complaints flood in from all sides about the poor state of Scotland’s roads.
A recent survey has found that Edinburgh’s are the worst, with Fife’s not far behind, but all councils seem to be accepting a high level of road surface damage as almost a matter of course.
We read report after report, complaint after complaint about the dire state of our roads, yet not a word of support for the public’s view from councillors who are supposed to represent us.
All seem to live in blissful ignorance, with some kind of inbuilt defence mechanism which enables them to absolve themselves of any blame for this disgraceful state of affairs.
It’s not that our councils do not have the money to remedy the situation.
They just choose to spend it on other projects, their own pet schemes which are in most cases neither necessary nor urgent.
Are our councillors in denial? It might be a good idea to ask councillors seeking re-election what their attitude to basic council duties such as road maintenance is.
If they do not think they are important, don’t vote for them. George K McMillan Mount Tabor Road Perth
Dear Editor Perth and Kinross Council have on our behalf spent our money on the gentrification of our city centre and it looks absolutely wonderful.
But, and there is always a but, what is the point of this if local traders are not given the necessary facilities and provision to encapsulate those filthy, dirty, overflowing, and potentially healththreatening bins which lie outside their premises?
Do not venture down the vennels in Perth – even the ones that have been mono-blocked at great expense – and, as for the area adjacent to the Kirkgate, the garbage is in full view and looks as it is coming out to meet you.
We all want a lovely Perth and spending £12million to achieve this by lighting up certain areas is commendable if it attracts visitors and tourists.
Let’s put up barriers to prevent them from straying from the chosen gentrified routes as we would not want them to catch something nasty to take home with them.
We spend a lot, and I mean a lot, of money promoting Perth and Perthshire but surely even the dimmest environmental officer employed by PKC can see that it is selfish traders who are working against making Perth a city to be proud of.
So it is now over to you the chamber of commerce, which represents local business and their interests - how would you solve this problem? Jim Ferguson Feus Place Perth
