Spectacular Coupar Angus display

- Clare Damodaran

Thousands of people gathered in Coupar Angus on Friday night last week for the annual Blast in the Park fireworks display in Larghan Park.

Organisers had promised another spectacular show for their 12th year in the east Perthshire town and didn’t disappoint.

As well as the firework display, there was a bonfire and the popular fire-breathing dragon was also back.

A range of hot food and drinks was available, including soup.

The fireworks are engineered by the award-winning Blast Design, run by former Coupar Angus man John Kettles.

He said: “It was a great night with fantastic weather and a great crowd.

“Unfortunately we did have a cancellation from the fun fair so next year I think we will have a longer The fire-breathing dragon fireworks display and do our own entertainment. People did miss the fun fair I think so we will up the ante next year.”

The event is free but donations are collected on the night. This year, proceeds from the collection will go towards donating a monkey puzzle tree to Larghan Park as a memorial to toddler Harlow Edwards who lived close to the park and was tragically killed on the town’s Forfar Road last Larghan Park The fireworks in year.

Money will also be donated to the haematology and oncology department at Perth Royal Infirmary.

Coupar Angus and Bendochy Community Council helps to run the event. Chair Wendy McCombes said: “John Kettles has done another fabulous job. The event was really well organised with lots of volunteers helping out and it was another great evening with a fantastic turnout.

“It is wonderful that this event is so well supported by people, there were thousands of people here again, with lots of locals as well as visitors from further afield enjoying the display.

“We very much appreciate John’s support of Coupar Angus and the investment he puts into the town each year.”

George Turnbull, watch manager for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Coupar Angus fire station, said: “It was a fantastic night and very well organised. The fire engine was very popular with the youngsters and we had a great night for it weather-wise too.”
