Of fallen war heroes

-

Dear Editor Perth Academy’s Flowers of the Forest Group recently held a successful ‘Stories and Stovies’ event.

The aim was to give families of those who fell in the Great War an opportunity to congregate and share their stories.

We are a group of school pupils who came together in 2015 to commemorate every soldier on our school memorial 100 years from the day they fell.

We hold a special service in the school sharing the stories of their life – from their time at Perth Academy to their service in the war. The initiative has been very successful – in fact, it is better than we ever expected.

We think the sacrifices made by the men from our school, during the Great War, deserve remembrance and appreciation. After all, we would not recognise the world today if they had not participated in the war effort. Whilst we have focused on Perth Academy students who gave their lives, this project has made connections worldwide.

At the ‘Stories and Stovies’ event, four cousins related to Lt John Sieber met for the first time in 20 years.

They were able to share memories and tears as we spoke about this gallant soldier.

With the generous support, we have been able to reunite families, raise awareness and give the respect that these men earned.

The sponsors we would like to thank are: Bookers Cash and Carry; Nairn for the donation of oatcakes; the Lovat Hotel for the donation of handmade stovies; Highland Spring for the donation of water; Mrs Gibson of Perth Academy for her donation of handmade shortbread.

We had a brilliant night which was made even more enjoyable due to these kind donations, which were hugely appreciated. We will remember them. Thank you again for your generosity.
