Newburgh

Whinnybank cat sanctuary An adult female cat and four kittens picked up recently by Sue in Kirkcaldy are settling well into their foster home. They were anxious when they arrived but are now playing well and are full of beans. The adult cat Cleo is up for rehoming. She is about one-yearsold, a pretty black and white cat who will make a great pet. The kittens will not be ready for some time. The mild weather has resulted in kitten season going on longer than usual. Sue received a call to another cat and kittens, again in Kirkcaldy, born under a shed which she hopes to be able to trap soon. Five-year-old Patch went to a lovely new home, but three more cats came into the sanctuary recently. Anyone who can offer a home to a cat, help at fundraising events, in the shops or at the sanctuary, should call Sue on 01337 840414, or visit www. catchat.org/adoption/fife.html or www.whinnybank.org.uk. Pitlochry

Arthritis awareness The speaker at the November meeting of Arthri- As part of Scottish Book Trust’s annual campaign to get Scotland writing, the public was asked to write pieces on the theme of‘nourish’and what it meant to them.

Hundreds of wonderful stories from across Scotland were submitted and for the second year running, Jennie Turnbull from Crieff got her thoughts in print.

Jennie said:“My contribution to 2017’s book Nourish, is called‘Seasoning’. It is the first of a series of poems written for my grandmother, who came to Scotland from Italy after the Second World War.

“I have always been fascinated by her story and am trying to explore and understand it through poetry.”

Jennie’s poem‘Seasoning’was selected to go in alongside poetry and prose by some famous authors, such as Mary Contini, bestselling author of Italian life and cooking, and Dave Myers of The Hairy Bikers.

Jennie added:“This is the second time I’ve been selected for a Book Week Scotland anthology and I’m delighted to be included again.”

Back in 2015, her story‘If I Had The Car’featured in the SBT’s book‘Journeys’. In the same year she was the winner of the William Soutar poetry competition in Perth, for another poem, inspired by her son.

There will also be an e-version of Nourish available from library lending services, and an audiobook available from Scottish Book Trust’s Soundcloud. Nourish will be downloadable for Book Week Scotland, which runs from November 27 to December 3.

For more information about Book Week Scotland, visit www.bookweekscotland.com tis Awareness in Atholl was Kirsty McWilliam of Riders of the Storm, Scotland’s equestrian stunt display team. She spoke to members on her career working with horses from an early age. And being selected for the Scottish team of equestrian vaulting (gymnastics on horseback), working in England to gain experience and setting up her own business in Killiekrankie. She keeps 14 horses and a team of riders who are involved in all kinds of activities. These include giving lessons and displays, providing confidence courses and being involved in productions for television and film to name but a few. It was a very interesting afternoon which was enjoyed by all. Chairman Hugh Mackintosh gave the vote of thanks. The group now look forward to their December meeting which will be their Christmas lunch. Football The Vale of Atholl FC league match was sponsored by R W Bell Building Services. The score was Vale 3 Pole Team 2 (Robinson scored three). The team was MacDonald, Clark, Coleman, Walker, Berry, Robinson, Carr, Smillie, Robertson, Malczewski, Stewart, Clark, Hall and Houston. After last week’s poor show Vale were hoping to put on a better show against the league leaders at the Rec. The early exchanges were even with the visitors preferring to hit long balls over Vale’s defence. For most of the time the back line were aware of their tactics and came out on top. However, on the few occasions they did get through, keeper McDonald handled it well, but was beaten once. Although, Alf Berry did well on the line to head it clear. Vale preferred to play through the middle and this paid off in the 30th minute when new signing Stewart and wide player Robinson ran on to a ball from Malczewski. Robinson won the race and lobbed the keeper to make the score 1-0. The same player made it two shortly after, cutting in from

the right past two defenders to slam the ball home, resulting in 2-0 at the break. The game was pretty open and stretched in the second half. Vale had the better game and should probably have gone further ahead. Stewart, Smillie and Robinson could also have added to the scoreline. MacDonald in Vale’s goal had a couple of good stops to keep the visitors at bay. Midway through the half, the Pole team pulled one back with a long shot. Vale’s keeper thought he had it covered to let the ball go out for a goal kick. But instead the ball hit the corner of the net. Matt Robertson had to go off after some heavy treatment. He was replaced by Houston which meant a bit of a re-shuffle. The positional changes made took some adjusting to and the visitors pressed for the leveller. It came when a good free kick was glanced home to make it 2-2, and there was not much the defence could do about to stop it. Pole team were leaving gaps at the back as they pushed for the winner, and it looked likely that Vale would score. Robinson in particular caused havoc down the right of the pitch. After another good run, he again cut inside, past three defenders and netted for 3-2 with five minutes to go. Vale played out time comfortably to claim the three points and the first league defeat for the visitors. It was an excellent result in Vale’s up and down season. They had good service from the defence, again, with Coleman and Walker the stand outs. Midfield was much better this week, getting a grip on the game with Matt Robertson looking as if he was back to form. New signing Stewart led the line very well and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Glenn Robinson came back to form with a bang, claiming all three goals and was named man of the match. Tomorrow the club will be at home to Bridgeton in a league game with a 2pm start. SWI Dr Jennifer Anthony addressed the October meeting of the Pitlochry branch of the Women’s Institute on the topic of ‘Care in the Atholl medical centre’.
