Let them eat cake all 10,000 slices of it

- Melanie Bonn

A 3D edible map of Perth and Kinross is going to be made out of cake and put together outside Perth Concert Hall on November 19. Then around 4pm it will be cut up and eaten.

The delightful idea of people baking and icing models of their local landmarks was dreampt up by Cakefest organiser Simon Preston: “It all began in 2010 when I developed the first Cakefest idea for Newcastle.

“It has been a fantastic formula that never fails to please all involved. And afterwards, everybody is wanting to do it again the following year. I love my job!”

As part of the Perth Winter Festival programme Simon has recuruited people to make the mouthwatering map of places in Perth and Perthshire.

Anyone can contact simon@ cakefest.com and agree a plan of action, be they amateur or professional.

He promises there will be around 10,000 slices of free cake going begging in the final carve-up.

So far the people of Perth and Kinross have willingly taken up the call to create famous buildings and landmarks out of sponge cake.

Cakemeister Simon said: “It is a big ask - you do all the work and buy all the ingredients - but people love it.

Some put hours and hours into building a masterpiece, others enter for fun and end up saying “bet you can’t tell what it is”, but the end result is truly amazing.”

“Every year I do a cakefest somewhere around Britain. This year it’s Perth’s turn.

“All the key landmarks went quite quick, but one or two, like the Black Watch Museum, have suddenly been freed up due to illness or the baker having to go away.”

There will be votes on the day to choose the favourite cake which will receive a special award. A previous Cakefest
