Gary’s KO makes it three in a row

- Matthew Gallagher

Perth professional Gary Wilson recorded his third consecutive victory in convincing style.

The unbeaten Railway Boxing Club coach stopped Dmitrijs Ovsjannikovs in the first round to build on a growing reputation.

Gary, competing in the On The Ropes promotions event in Airdrie, sensed that he was on to a winner from the first bell.

The 36-year-old used his jab to force the Latvian to raise his guard, which left a slight opening to the body.

He let rip with a big shot to drop his opponent to the canvas before the referee called time on the bout with one minute and 22 seconds clocked.

“It turned out to be an easy win, which surprised me because my opponent had been the distance with some good fighters,” Gary said.

“As soon as I landed the first jab I could tell by the look on his face that I could hurt him.

“I stuck to the game plan by going to the body and as soon as I landed a good shot to the body I didn’t think he would make the count.

“Looking back, I think I could have used him to get a few rounds under my belt but it’s best to just get him out of there and get the win.

“All three wins have been by knockout and I’m really happy with that, especially because some of these pros are hard to stop.”

Now the former Perth Academy pupil has his sights set on a British Masters title.

He said: “I trained so hard for so long after my last amateur fight and I think I’ve adapted really well to the professional game.

“Hopefully my manager can steadily match me with better fighters.

“He has promised me a shot at a British Masters title, hopefully next summer after another bout Gary Wilson won in the first round

Brian Hayes in February or March.

“The masters titles have been around for years and many good pros have won them, including the likes of Ricky Burns. It is definitely something I want.

“I’m 36 now but I’m stronger than ever and I reckon I have another three years if I want it. At the moment I’ll just keep training and trying to win.”

There was further success for Perth Railway Boxing Club this week as Zack Fummey brought Gary in action

home a silver medal from the Northern District Championships.

Zack faced Michael George in the Inverurie final, with the Highland Boxing Academy star taking the title in a hard-fought battle. “This was a very hardfought contest which could have gone either way,” said Railway secretary Stuart Campbell. “Both boxers gave their all. It was not to be for Zack but he won the silver and did everyone at the club proud.” The semi-final of the competition, held in Insch, was an all-Perth bout as Zack defeated Tony Williamson over three rounds.
