Swifts star desperate to take outTranent

- Matthew Gallagher

Jeanfield Swifts striker Robbie Holden is hoping Saturday can be the start of a hot streak in front of goal.

The Perth forward will be part of a Riverside squad determined to advance beyond Tranent and into round four of the Scottish Junior Cup.

Holden, who expects a difficult afternoon in East Lothian this weekend, knows his name needs to be on the scoresheet on a more regular basis.

He said: “I would have liked to have scored a few more this season because I had a good year last year in front of goal.

“It’s been a bit slower this year a tough test for us and away from home obviously adds to that.

“We’ll need to be at our best to get through. The draw could have been a lot easier for us, that is for sure.”

Now a Super League side, Holden believes Swifts will be a team with a target on their back. But he expects his fellow players to thrive under the pressure.

Holden told the PA: “We’re probably now looked on as a scalp for others and one of the achievable ones for some of the progressive East Premier teams.

“The pressure is on us because at the end of the day we are the top side in terms of this tie.

“But we’re always looking to go that stage further and hopefully this year is the one to do it.

“On our day we can compete with some of the best teams football wise.

“It’s whether we can dig through the tougher situations when you need to grind out 1-0 wins in Ayrshire and places like that.”

Holden is far from ready to call time on his playing days but he has been learning the ropes and picking up some experience as a coach.

He said: “I’ve been doing a bit of coaching at training.

“I’m not quite ready to let go of the playing side yet but it’s been a good taster for me this season.

“Management is something which is definitely on my radar when I do decide to hang up the boots.”
