A torrent of abuse after crash

-

A Perth man unleashed a torrent of abuse at police after a three-car, rush hour collision on the city’s Glasgow Road.

Uninsured driver Kevin O’Rourke flipped when he was handcuffed and launched a verbal tirade, threatening to “murder”officers - and also“bomb”their station headquarters in Barrack Street.

The outburst led to the 42-year-old, of Union Lane, being jailed for six months at Perth Sheriff Court.

He was also banned for 36 months after Sheriff Lindsay Foulis noted it was the 10th time he had been caught driving without insurance.

He admitted driving carelessly on July 13 this year, failing to keep a proper look-out and colliding with a stationary van which in turn hit another car in front.

He also had no insurance cover - and repeatedly shouted, swore and threatened police at the accident scene and on his way to police headquarters.

Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney said the accused was travelling in a queue of traffic but he accused failed to observe the other vehicles had come to a stop.

All the drivers exited their vehicles and when O’Rourke informed them he had no insurance, the police were contacted.

He was later arrested and as he was placed in handcuffs, he became aggressive and shouted:“I’m gonna f***ing murder you,”and “See when I get out of here, I’m gonna bomb the station. You’ll see what happens.”

Solicitor David Holmes said his client had initially co-operated and hadn’t been“difficult.”

But there had been a question over ownership of the vehicle he was driving and whether he was entitled to drive it. He wished to apologise for his behaviour.

Jailing him, Sheriff Foulis said he wasn’t“putting up”with the accused’s behaviour towards police.
