5” blade is found on man

-

A Perth man was caught with a steak knife with a blade almost five inches long after he had been taken to the Barrack Street police headquarters.

The discovery led to 29-year-old Chad Whyte, of Princes Street, being jailed for 136 days at Perth Sheriff Court.

He admitted having the blade in Barrack Street - and at the police office on April 29.

Depute fiscal Claire Kennedy said the accused had been taken to the police office because of concerns for his welfare.

The knife, which had a four-andthree-quarter inch blade with a serrated edge, was then found on him.

When cautioned and charged, he told officers:“I don’t remember having the knife.”

Solicitor David Holmes said his client had a heroin problem and he had suffered a relapse.

“He appreciates your lordship will have custody in mind,”stated the lawyer.

“He would use his time in prison to address his difficulty and seek assistance.”

Sheriff William Wood, who noted that Whyte had brought his belongings in a bag with him, said:“Clearly you have come prepared for a custodial sentence. I’m not going to disappoint you.”

He added:“I am satisfied a custodial sentence is merited and is the only way to deal with it.”

The accused admitted a number of previous convictions.
