Perth golfer aims to beat his own record

Scott to top 113 competitive rounds next season

- Matthew Gallagher

A Perth golfer played the most competitions in Scotland this season - and already he is planning on breaking his total next year.

Scott Stewart, a member of Craigie Hill and Perth Artisans, teed-up for an incredible 113 competitive rounds in 2017.

An average of 16 rounds per month resulted in the 45-year-old pipping Newmachar member Jordan Calder to the top total.

“I had no idea that I had played the most competitions in Scotland,” Scott said. “I got a message from Niall McGill to make me aware of it.

“I’m still waiting on the wind up and someone to say this is a big joke. I’ve been getting wound up a bit but a lot of my mates can’t be far away from me.

“I’m now going to have to break the 113 competitions total. I’ve always been competitive and I just don’t like losing.”

Scott, who plays off a handicap of five, admits he often tries to squeeze in TWO rounds a day.

He said: “I really enjoying playing golf. Curling is my other game but that has taken a wee side step recently.

“I play at Craigie Hill and at Perth Artisans. Over the years, not so much now, I would go around the country playing in open tournaments.

“If there was an open to play, me and a couple of the boys would usually be away.

“A lot of people don’t like playing at Craigie Hill and when you try to bring your pals they say it’s too hilly. But I don’t mind it at all.

“I play most of my competitions at Craigie Hill and, if I’m able on a Saturday, I’ll go and play a second round down with the Artisans.

“I’m not getting any younger but I’m just able to get 36 holes completed in a day.

“I work on the bins with the council so I’m on my feet all of the time. I like to keep active and not sit about the house.”

While his handicap has stalled at five, Scott is hoping it can be lowered next season.

He told the PA: “I have seen my golf improve over the years. In the last couple, I’ve been stuck at the handicap of five. Craigie Hill member Scott Stewart

“I’ve started taking lessons now to hopefully get a little better but I don’t know if old age will catch up with me.

“I’m lucky that I have a lot of pals who I can go out and play with.

“Even those who aren’t members, I’ll give them a phone and take them for a game.

“To me it is all about getting your handicap down. The aim is always to try and lower that handicap.”
