Limited holiday waste collections

- Rachel Clark

Council chiefs have revealed details of waste collection arrangements over the festive period.

There will be no waste kerbside collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day or January 2.

Residents who are due to have their green or blue-lidded bins uplifted on Monday, December 25 will now be emptied on Saturday December 23.

Likewise, those due out on Boxing Day will now be uplifted on Wednesday, December 27.

Bins due to be collected on New Year’s Day will now be picked up on Saturday, December 27, and finally those expected out on Tuesday, January 2 will now be taken away on Wednesday, January 3.

There will also be no brownlidded bin collections between Saturday, December 23 and Friday, January 5. Businesses who are due to have their waste collections on any of these four days will be written to with a new collection date.

As well as this, all nine recycling centres across Perth and Kinross will be shut over the festive period.

Councillor Colin Stewart, convener of the environment, enterprise and infrastructure committee at Perth and Kinross Council, said residents may also not have their bins collected if the weather is particularly bad.

He said:“If there is snow or ice this winter, our waste services crews will do their best to reach your home to empty your bins, but if there are extreme weather conditions, it may not be safe for the lorry to access all parts of Perth and Kinross.

“The council will post any updates on their website, Facebook and Twitter, and we would also encourage you to sign up to the email alerts via www.pkc. gov.uk/emailalerts

“Regular collections will then resume within five working days of the return of less hazardous weather conditions.”

In addition, the council’s waste team has reminded residents that real Christmas trees can be chopped up into small bits and put into the brown-lidded bins for a kerbside collections once the festive season is over.

However, no real or artificial trees will be collected if they are left on the kerb and not in a fully-closed bin.

Elsewhere, public toilets will also be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2 with the exception of Ropemaker’s Close in Perth, which will remain open on Boxing Day and January 2 between 10am and 4pm.

On these public holidays, Perth Crematorium and Greyfriars Cemetery will also be closed. Residents face revised bin collection times
