ABERFELDY SPEEDING SHOCKER
Radar survey reveals drivers ignore law with excessive speed
Crieff Road in Aberfeldy Hundreds of cars speed through the centre of a Highland Perthshire town well over the legal limit every day, concerned locals have claimed.
Findings of a recent survey conducted by Aberfeldy Community Council recently revealed that as many as 820 cars a day shot through at more than 30mph in the busiest part of town.
On an average day when the autumn survey was being conducted, Kenmore Road, the westerly approach to the local school, had two speeding vehicles clocked at more than 60mph.
The speed survey also found school Speed survey children were faced with regular car traffic passing the entrance to Breadalbane Academy at between 35 and 40mph.
The survey was conducted over approximately one month in five locations around Aberfeldy including Taybridge Road, Crieff Road, Kenmore Street and Kenmore Road.
All these locations have a clearly-posted, basic 30mph speed limit and extra data was collected for Crieff Road near Breadalbane Academy at key school pick-up and dropoff times, when a flashing 20mph sign was in operation.
Of a total of nearly 70,000 vehicle movements in 30 days, 24,798 (36.2%) exceeded the 30mph limit. Kenmore Road
and Dunkeld Road both had more law-breakers than lawabiding drivers.
That is more than 820 vehicles a day driving illegally on the arterial routes through the town and more than 100 drivers per day at speeds that would could cost them their licence if clocked by Police Scotland officers.
“The important thing at the moment is that the results are very striking,” commented Victor Clements, chair of Aberfeldy Community Council.
“In essence, if detected with the appropriate legal protocols, more than 100, potentially licence-losing events would be happening every day.”
In Crieff Road, when the school 20mph signal was flashing at key times only 15% of drivers kept to the speed limit.
And data revealed a problem with the number of trucks exceeding the limit on Taybridge Road, from Wade’s Bridge, where access from private drives is awkward and blind.
