Two members of local Scottish Women’s Institute branches have been busy knitting special Hogmanay kilts for toy carrots - to raise money for charity.

Dorothy Morris from Kinross SWI and Muriel Brown, of the Blairgowrie and District branch, are just two of the many ladies from the SWI who have spent the past few weeks knitting special made-to-measure kilts for the Aldi supermarket Christmas mascot, ‘Kevin the Carrot’.

The toy carrots, along with their hand-knitted Hogmanay kilts, will be raffled off as part of a competition run by the supermarket to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The ladies’ efforts come after the ‘Kevin the Carrot’ toys sold out at the supermarket after only one day, with shoppers now being invited to enter the competition for a chance to win one of the few remaining toys.

Proceeds from Dorothy and Muriel’s knitting efforts will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust, after the supermarket pledged to raise £5million for the charity over the next five years.

Linda Retson, chairman of the Scottish Women’s Institutes, Dorothy Morris

said: “Our members have been challenged to make many unique and unusual things such as stripy dog jackets for dogs in rehoming centres, but knitting kilts for Aldi’s ‘Kevin the Carrot’ has been a new one on us!

“It’s great to bring the talents of our members to a new audience and to show the great crafts and great fun women can have as SWI members, especially when our kitling out of Kevin is for such a good cause.” Blairgowrie and District SWI’s Muriel Brown

Graham Nicolson, group buying director for Scotland at Aldi, added: “‘Kevin the Carrot’ has fast become a festive favourite with homes across the nation rooting for him as his story took many twists and turns, often leaving us wondering what would come next!

“We wanted to delight our customers with one final surprise, working with the wonderful ladies of the SWI who gave their time and fantastic skills to ensuring

Kevin celebrates Hogmanay in true Scottish style.”
