Young musicians set to play trad show in March

-

Young musicians from all backgrounds are being offered the chance to work with some of the best musicians in the country and to perform in a big show at Perth Concert Hall.

Horsecross Arts is looking for strong, reasonably advanced players aged 14-22 to join in a Gordon Duncan Experience (GDE) project, culminating with a show on stage in Perth on March 24.

GDE is Perthshire’s young big band, set up in honour of the gifted local piper Gordon Duncan.

The project organisers are not just looking for traditional musicians - it’s open to all instruments and styles.

Those who want to take up the project don’t have to have played in any kind of band before, but there may be auditions at their discretion.

The way new members will be chosen will be from up-to-date recordings sent in with their email application.

In terms of what commitment is needed, there are six days of weekend rehearsals over the next three months and then the show itself.

Youngsters who come on board will be tutored by Steven Blake, musical director for the Gordon Duncan Experience, Hamish Napier and members of his band, including Ross Ainslie and Patsy Reid.

Napier stepped into the spotlight in 2016 with his album ‘The River’. It earned fantastic reviews he will perform it as part of the show on March 24.

“The opportunity really stands out because it’s a chance to work with some of the best musicians in the country, be part of a big ensemble, meet like-minded young people and perform in a big show at Perth Concert Hall” said Horsecross Arts music facilitator, Joanne Greer. “And it’s free.”
