Pitlochry’s party time

Hundreds at town’s big bash

- Rachel Clark

Hundreds of revellers turned out in the cold to bring in the New Year at the Pitlochry 2018 street party.

The crowds were entertained on the Highland Perthshire town’s Atholl Road, with ceilidh music from the J Delaney Band and entertainment from compere Eddie Rose.

The dancing and singing was enjoyed by a large turnout on the day, 12 months on from when the 2017 event had to be cancelled at the last minute after a fire broke out on the upper floor of the nearby Fisher’s Hotel.

But, with Fisher’s Hotel re-opened and refurbished after last year’s blaze, it was a full house inside for Silly McBee the clown’s show for younger ones – with children delighted as always by the Kinloch Rannoch favourite’s tricks and jokes.

Visitors and residents were kept well fed throughout the day with sausage rolls and soup from Pitlochry’s Macdonald Bros Butchers. The mulled wine proved so popular it sold out halfway through the party.

A highlight of the day was a stellar raffle draw, with top prizes being donated from a number of the town’s hotels, The Enchanted Forest, music festival March Into Pitlochry, Blair Athol Distillery and Pitlochry Golf Club, amongst others.

The annual gathering was then rounded off in style with an after-party in The Old Mill Inn with live music from Perth band Red Pine Timber Company.

Graham Holmes, a member of the organising committee, thanked all those involved.

He said: “It was very busy, and very much a success. Members of the Phin and Knight families thoroughly enjoyed the Pitlochry party start to 2018

“It went very well so we are grateful to the band and to Eddie Rose, and to The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band and Silly McBee the clown - everyone who made it work and made it so successful.

“Thanks as well to Macdonald Bros Butchers for the food - there was a very long queue for food all day!”

He added the committee will meet next week to decide how to use the money raised.

He continued: “We sold more raffle tickets this year than we have in the past. We printed out an extra 500 tickets, and it’s just as well we did because otherwise we would have run out.

“The money raised from the raffle and the food will go towards financing next year’s party, but there will be enough in the kitty so we usually give out the rest to local good causes.”
