McMillan can be a Perth star

- Matthew Gallagher

MacLean hopes new Perth signing David McMillan can be a hit at Saints Veteran St Johnstone striker Steven MacLean believes David McMillan’s impressive track record gives him every chance of being a smash hit in the Premiership.

Perth boss Tommy Wright is looking to his recruit from Dundalk to bolster Saints’ firepower in the second half of the season.

And McMillan’s arrival has been welcomed by Macca, who has seen squad man Graham Cummins leave for Irish champions Cork City.

He said: “I have seen it all down the years.

“I have lost my place, I’ve been injured, dropped, binned and fallen out with managers. So the way I see it, it’s good for the club and for competition. Whoever is playing well will be in the team.

“We needed another option and the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned.”

MacLean is backing McMillan (29) to make an immediate impression after the winter break.

He added: “I’d like to think that he will hit the ground running. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t when you come to a new club. It’ll depend on how his fitness is and what sort of lad he is.

“Some players coming in here struggle with the training because it is quite high tempo.

“But we have a good dressing room and he will get a warm welcome.

“I don’t know what standard the football is over there [in Ireland]and they probably slaughter our game.

“But David is coming in with an impressive goalscoring record and he has scored at Europa League MacLean has backed new signing David McMillan to shine

and Champions League qualifying level. Obviously he has been doing something right.”

MacLean has seized the chance to take his family to Tenerife for some sun during the winter shutdown.

But the 35-year-old remains sceptical about the three-week hiatus.

He explained: “It’s about re-charging the batteries and being ready to go again.

“But I’m still not convinced by this winter break.

“You have six games in quick succession when you come back and the weather and the pitches can be dodgy.

“You are getting a rest then your body is getting done in again. The jury is still out.”
