St Serf’s Church The service last Sunday was conducted by Michael Archibald and his sermon was based on ‘progress’. Christina Bayne read the readings, Alison Hooper was the organist and the flowers were kindly gifted by Linda Al-Ibrahimi. There will be a meeting of the Congregati­onal Board on Thursday, January 25 at 7pm, followed by a meeting of the Kirk Session. Parish Church During term time the Sunday school welcomes children to the front pews of the church. A creche for under-threes is available during the Sunday morning services. The prayer group meets on Thursdays in Burnside Court lounge, at 10.30am. Choir rehearsal is every Friday at 6.45pm. The church website www. alythparis­hchurch.org.uk is updated weekly and contains details of the Family History Project, kirk news and lots of photos. Literary Society The first meeting of the Alyth Literary Society in 2018 will take place on Tuesday, January 16, in the Ogilvy Rooms, when members of the Alyth Show committee will present a history of the show. Their next meeting, on February 6 at 7pm, will be the annual general meeting. This will be followed by an illustrate­d talk on the RNLI at Broughty Ferry by Murray Brown. Pipe Band Alyth and District Pipe Band practise on Wednesdays from 6pm in Alyth town hall. SWI The ladies are holding a Scottish musical evening, featuring various local artists on Tuesday, January 16 at 7.30pm, in the Birnam Institute. The competitio­ns on the night will be for a Scottish tea towel and a plain ginger bread. This is an open meeting and all are welcome to come along.

Blackwater

Burns Supper Blackwater Hall committee are hosting a Burns supper in the hall on Saturday, January 27, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets for the event are available from Morag Houstoun on 01250 882241. Bowling Club The winter season resumed at the club last Friday. The winners of the darts and dominoes were: darts - 1st Eddie Grey, 2nd Lilian Grey and booby prize - Tam McAllister. Dominoes: 1st - Pat Birse, 2nd - Lewis Nicoll. The AGM will take place this Sunday, January 14 at 2pm, and it is hoped that all members will be in attendance. Church Guild The group met for this first meeting of the year on Thursday of this week in Burrelton Church halls when an update on the CHAS charity was given to the members. The Guild meets each week on Thursday afternoons in the church halls at 2pm. Senior Club The next meeting will take place on Thursday, January 18, when the Willie Syme knock-out domino contest will be taking place.

Clunie

Knit and Natter The next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 17. The group meets in Clunie Hall on the third Wednesday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. Whist The next whist event in Clunie Hall will be tonight (Friday, January 12) at 7.30pm.

Collace

Collace Guild The Guild resumes on Wednesday, January 17 at 7pm in Kinrossie Hall. The speaker for the evening will be church minister, the Rev Stevie Thomson. All are welcome to join in the fellowship.

Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Andy Graham and the readings were by Robert Farquson,

harson, taken from Isaiah chapter 60, verses 1-6 and Matthew chapter two, verses 1-12. Rev Graham spoke about the fear of darkness that many of his parishione­rs experience. He also spoke of the epiphany which was associated with the visit by the Magi during their worship of the baby Jesus, who was to become the light of the world. In his teachings Jesus showed us how, by having him at the centre of our lives, he can dispel the darkness. Austin Wilkie, organist, played ‘Epiphany Prelude, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star’ by Max Reger, ‘Andante in C Major’ by WJ Westbrook and ‘Short Prelude and Fugue in C’ by JS Bach. Rev Graham will be on annual leave from now until January 16, inclusive. Rev Harry Mowbray will provide pastoral care during this time for anyone who requires the services of a minister. He can be contacted on 01250 872146. Rosemary Patterson will be conducting services at Bendochy and the Abbey churches this Sunday, January 14. The Abbey kirk session will meet on Wednesday, January 17, at 7.30pm in the church. Any items for the agenda should be sent to the moderator or clerk before the meeting. The children’s ministry resumed their meetings on Thursday of this week. Organisers would like to thank everyone who helped to set up for the groups. Speaker David Munro from Kinross and District Town Twinning Associatio­n will talk on ‘Town Twinning, Its Birth, Early Years and Maturity’. Rekindling of ‘the Auld Alliance’ including culture, heritage and school exchanges. Membership costs: adults £6, over-60s £5, under-18s free, visitors £2 per talk.
