Moo-vellous news for Highland coo project

- Rachel Clark

A project to create a family of life-sized Highland cow sculptures has been given a funding boost.

Crieff in Leaf has been awarded £1300 from Perth and Kinross Council’s creative communities fund, which will now be used to install an interactive information board in both English and Gaelic to go alongside the proposed family of Highland cows in the town’s Burrell Square.

The overall aim of ‘Leafy Coos’ project is to ensure the cows’ design, planting and landscape all convey aspects of Crieff ’s cultural heritage, and the coats of the cows will all be made out of individual steel leaves.

Crieff in Leaf will work with school pupils to research the town’s history.

The group is particularly keen to focus on the origin of the town’s name, its droving heritage, and the importance of weaving and whisky distilling in the area.

Crieff in Leaf chair Kim Osborne said: “The aim of the project is to engage with the community in order to create a landmark that will enhance civic pride and act as a draw for visitors.

“We hope to install the sculptures during the summer and that they will help make the square an attractive place for locals, walkers, cyclists and other visitors.

“To get to this point in the project has been a lot of work for the team, but we’ve had a lot of support along the way to help us raise the funds for the sculptures themselves and as members of the Take a Pride in Perthshire Association we have been able to draw on their project management expertise.”

Supporters of the project can make a £5 donation to be listed as an official sponsor and have their name featured on the Leafy Coo’s website.

Those who donate £250 or more can “buy” a leaf and have a name of engraved on it, which will be placed on one of the cows.
