Good posture stops injuries
It’s just nine weeks until the new golf season gets underway, meaning it’s time to get the clubs dusted down.
Today I will start with your body posture, as I can count on one hand how many good ones I see each week!
To create a good effective posture, you should tilt forwards from your waist, sticking your rear end out to counter balance, then slightly flex your knees.
This will form an approximate 90 degree angle between your club shaft and your spine around which you will pivot your shoulders.
Having this axle in place will make it much easier for your clubhead to consistently return to the ball, producing a much crisper strike (pic1).
The most common fault I see at address position is slouching (pic 2).
I often have pupils telling me that they have bad backs and golf is making it worse.
Well this is why. If you turn your shoulders whilst your back is curved, then you are very likely to put major strain on your back.
The other fault I tend to see, is when a player creates a nice flat spine, but does not tilt forward enough and over-flexes their knees to get down to the ball (pic 3)
This results in very inconsistent ball striking.
Try practicing at home in front of a full length mirror and once you have the correct posture, take it to the range.
