Legends to play for cup in Fair City Perth to host Soccer Sixes tournament

Frank McAvennie Football fans in Perth will have the opportunit­y to watch - and even play alongisde some of the biggest names in Scottish football.

Touring football production Old Firm Legends is coming to the Fair City on Sunday, February 4, with its Legends Soccer Sixes tournament.

The competitio­n, which will be held at the sports facility at Perth College UHI, will see Scottish football icons play a round robin tournament, showcasing their talents following their retirement from playing.

Six teams have been confirmed as playing – including a Celtic squad, two Rangers squads, and a Scotland, USA and St Johnstone team making up the bill.

Captains Garry O’Connor, Derek Ferguson, Dougie Bell, Frank McAvennie, John MacDonald and former Saints star Rudi Vata will lead the teams out for 14-minute matches.

The touring exhibition matches help raise money for local projects, and youngsters in Perthshire could benefit.

Young Perthshire football teams have been invited to watch the former top flight stars in action, and could we awarded new kits as well.

Scotland skipper Garry O’Connor is looking forward to the competitio­n.

The former Hibs, Birmingham City and Lokomotiv Moscow striker will be captaining Scotland, and is hoping Perth fans will get behind the community project.

He said: “I’ve been involved with the legends’ games for about a year now and I love it. It’s a great way to spend Sundays.

“I usually play for Hibs or Celtic teams, but I’m in charge of the Scotland team in Perth.

“Usually the Rangers legends will choose to play for the club rather than the country, but I’m hoping they’ll send a few my way for a bit of help.

“It’s a really good way to give back and it’s really beneficial to support local causes. It’s a community-based project that supports causes right across Scotland - we’ve been doing it everywhere, right up to Aberdeen and the Highlands. Derek Ferguson

“It’s great craic and it’s a keeps us ex-pros active, as well as getting people involved in football across the country.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the tournament in Perth - I’ve heard that it’s a really good arena with seating too.”

A spokespers­on for Old Firm Legends told the Perthshire Advertiser: “There will be six teams playing in a round robin tournament - and there’s no hanging about between matches.

“We take this competitio­n around the country every year or so and it’s always great.

“The first match will kick off at 6.30pm, and doors open an hour Garry O’Connor

ExSaint Rudi Vata will be back in the Fair City before.

“There will be a fanfare and we’ve invited along some local kids’ football clubs, who will get a signed ball

“Scotland captain Garry O’Connor will also be doing a prize draw, and one of the teams will be set up with a brand new set of kits from us.

“There are still a few places left on Rudi Vata’s St Johnstone team and Derek Ferguson’s Rangers team so get in touch for the opportunit­y to play.”

Admission costs £10 for adults and £5 for concession­s and kids.
