Library now drop off point for foodbank
Perth’s AK Bell and three others help collections
Donations for Perth and Kinross’ foodbank can now be handed into a number of local libraries.
A collection point opened up at Perth’s AK Bell Library on York Place on Wednesday, allowing bighearted bookworms to drop off food donations as well as their books when visiting the region’s libraries.
This was then followed by three further collection points being set up at Auchterarder, Blairgowrie and Loch Leven community library in Kinross on Friday.
The idea came about after one of AK Bell’s venue assistants, Sean Hall, donated food at his local supermarket collection point, and thought it would be a good idea to introduce them to libraries and museums as well.
Helen Smout, chief executive of Culture Perth and Kinross - which runs the four libraries said: “I am pleased to announce that Culture Perth and Kinross will be supporting Perth and Kinross Foodbank by offering collection points at the AK Bell Library, plus other collection points in Auchterarder, Blairgowrie and Kinross.
“I’d like to thank Sean Hall for flagging up this great idea. Culture Perth and Kinross venues are at the heart of the local community and we are proud to be supporting this valuable service and its dedicated volunteers.
“We know how generous our customers are and that’s why we’re offering food collection points for those most in need in Perth and Kinross.”
Perth and Kinross Foodbank received four months’ worth of food in only six weeks in the run up to Christmas last year.
As a result, the team are asking for funds to be raised to help them upgrade their premises on Cutlog Vennel in the city centre.
They are also asking for donations specifically of mashed or tinned potatoes, sugar, men’s toiletries, tinned fruit and vegetables, and items which are gluten-free or vegan.
