Paper display will unfold

-

An exhibition dedicated to the art of paper has opened in Perth.

The touring exhibition, called“On Paper”, has made its first stop at Perth Museum and Art Gallery, promising scandal, war, geography, mathematics and art through the use of paper.

Some of the exhibits will include paper sculptures, paper collages, graph paper, letterheads from the Ministry of Defence and maps.

A number of items have also been loaned from the British Council Collection for this one of a kind exhibition.

Big names from the art world including Roy Lichtenstein, Damien Hirst, Cornelia Parker and Eduardo Paolozzi, as well as Scottish artists such as Karla Black and Jim Lambie, will all be featured in the On Paper exhibition.

Jenny Kinnear, head of museums and collections at Culture Perth and Kinross - the arts organisation behind the city centre museum - said:“Paper and all its artistic and communicative forms can range from delicately beautiful to political and powerful.

“We hope that with the wide range of exhibits on show in On Paper, visitors will appreciate paper’s weight, if you’ll pardon the pun.”

The paper exhibition has been specially curated by the Art Council Collection. A spokesperson for the collection said:“On Paper makes paper the subject of the exhibition rather than a support mechanism for drawings.

“The exhibition includes three-dimensional objects, including hanging structures made from sugar paper, hair gel and chalk by Karla Black, and a cape made of cloakroom tickets from Gareth Jones.

“There are also collages from Eduardo Paolozzi, Roland Penrose, John ‘On Paper’is under way Stezaker and Tony Swain.

“An old envelope, an ordnance survey map and graph paper are also featured.”

On Paper will be on display at Perth Museum and Art Gallery until Saturday, March 3 before touring across the UK for the next 12 months.
