These Perth ladies aren’t for turning

Rhee leads the charge for SJ Women

- Matthew Gallagher

Rhee Tweedie wants to show what the real St Johnstone Women can do following a disappointing opening day defeat.

The McDiarmid Park centreback admits there was a sense of frustration in the aftermath of Sunday’s home loss against Central Girls.

But a determination is strong within the Perth camp to bounce back in style as Saints prepare to travel north east to take on Aberdeen.

“We were very disappointed after the Central game,”Tweedie said.“We had a really good pre-season with great coaching and prepared well.

“But we let ourselves down in the first half. We regrouped at half-time and in the second half we did pick it up.

“If we started the game like we did in the second half then we probably would have walked away with the three points.

“We’re good with coping with pressure. We hadn’t played Central before but we knew what to expect.

“We want to prove this Sunday what we can really do. We know it’s going to be difficult away from home but we’re going up there for the points.

“We finished fifth again last season but towards the Saints defender Rhee Tweedie end we were looking at third. It can change so quickly.

“Although we were disappointed with the Central game, it doesn’t determine where you are going to finish.

“We will be pushing for a higher finish this time. We’ve played a lot of the teams before and know what to expect from them.”

Tweedie (25) is loving life at Saints and is prepared to give her all to help the club succeed.

“I’m really enjoying my football and everyone has been working really hard in the background,”she said.

“The girls all seem really proud to play for the badge. We’re going to put in 100 per cent and take each game as it comes.”

Head coach Jason McCrindle is confident his players will produce the required reaction up in Aberdeen on Sunday.

“Training this week is about putting the wrongs right and making sure it doesn’t happen again,”McCrindle told the PA.

“We will see a reaction and a better performance. It’s only one game so we’re not going to worry about it too much.

“I have every confidence and every belief in the players that last Sunday was a one off. We’re looking forward to going up to Aberdeen.

“Every game is tough. But this is a great game to come back into because Aberdeen will be one of the favourites for the league.

“If you want to test yourself and put what happened last week right then it’s the perfect place to go and do it.”

Aberdeen opened up their Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 campaign with a 4-1 win over Glasgow Girls.

McCrindle said:“The result was a wee bit surprising but I think Aberdeen have set their stall out early doors to put down a marker.

“It’s up to us to implement what we want to do. We have a couple of wee niggles in the squad but it’s looking to be similar to what it was last week.

“There will be one or two changes in terms of combating Aberdeen.”
