Council set to mark LGBT History

- Ross Gardiner

A diverse range of community events are still to take place during February 2018 in Perth and Kinross to mark LGBT History Month.

Today (Tuesday, February 20) is Pink Heritage Day and a special drop-in event will be held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, organised by Pink Saltire and LGBT Youth Scotland. The findings of an independent survey into LGBT life in Perth and Kinross will be presented on Thursday, February 22, by LGBT Youth Scotland’s GLOW group, at the AK Bell Library.

Purple Friday, this year on February 23, will see people locally taking a stand against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and showing their support for LGBT equality.

Finally on Tuesday, February 27, there will be a screening of the 2014 film‘Pride’, which takes as its inspiration the true story of gay and lesbian activists who raised money to support families affected by the 1984 Miners’Strike.

Throughout the month, Perth and Kinross Council and PKAVS are flying the Rainbow Flag at their main offices. Staff information and awareness sessions are also being held in a range of local organisations and schools.

Housing and Communities Convener, Councillor Peter Barrett said:“LGBT History Month is for everyone: community groups, organisations, individuals, activists, service providers, LGBT and non-LGBT people alike.

“I’m very pleased that as a council we are supporting the first LGBT History Month programme locally with a really varied range of events to bring people together and celebrate LGBT life in Perth and Kinross.”
