‘Kill’ and ‘rape’ threats to cops by city joyrider in BMW

- Court reporter

A Perth man was traced by police after they received an anonymous tip-off that a number of boozed up men were joyriding around Perth in a“borrowed”silver BMW two days before Christmas.

And when 21-year-old Kelvin Campbell, of Struan Road, was arrested, he threatened to“kill”two officers - and rape their families.

It later emerged that he was a disqualified driver and had no insurance - and he also refused to complete the drink/ driving procedure when taken to Perth Police HQ.

The catalogue of incidents led to him being jailed for 46 weeks and banned from driving for 10 years at Perth Sheriff Court.

He admitted driving the car carelessly in Perth’s South Inch car park on December 23 last year and colliding with a barrier fence.

The other motoring charges followed when computer checks were carried out.

He also pleaded guilty to repeatedly shouting and swearing and making violent threats to police in Perth’s St Andrews Street.

Not guilty pleas were accepted to several other charges, including taking and driving away the BMW from Coupar Angus.

A co-accused, 19-year-old Robbie Smullen, of Rannoch Road, was put on the Right Track programme after he unleashed an angry tirade at officers.

The court heard the car was spotted on Perth’s Tay Street in the early hours and was then seen reversing into the fence at the South Inch car park.

A number of people immediately exited the vehicle and ran across the grass area but Campbell and Smullen were captured a short time later.

Jailing Campbell, Sheriff William Wood described him as“a menace”and added: “Because of your persistence with alcohol - and then driving while disqualified - the court really has no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence.”

The jail term was backdated to December 23 when he was first remanded.

Smullen, said to be in an “altogether different category,”will have his progress on Right Track reviewed on March 27 when he will also be sentenced on other matters.
