Selfish drivers add to parking problems

- Rachel Clark

A Perth city councillor says the lack of parking at one of the region’s biggest employers is adding to traffic problems in the Inveralmond Industrial Estate.

Cllr Harry Coates, who represents Perth City North at the local authority, reckons parking restrictions imposed on staff working at Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) are forcing them to use the industrial estate as a car park.

He said:“This is something that has been going on for quite a while now, and I want to get it dealt with and see the end of it, because the businesses are suffering.

“A lot of it relates to SSE - the staff are only allowed to take their cars so many days a week, so they often park in the industrial estate.”

“I want to encourage people to use public transport. I personally have a £10.30 Perth megarider ticket that takes me everywhere I need to go - why don’t people at SSE use that?

“One thing I can’t understand is how people can be so selfish to park on the pavement.

“If someone came past on a walk with their children pushing a pram, they are forced to walk onto the road by these selfish drivers. It blocks up the pavement and makes life difficult for businesses, it really does.”

A spokesperson for SSE said:“We are aware of concerns about parking outside our head office and have reminded employees of the dangers associated with irresponsible parking.

“To help address the issue we have worked closely with the local authority to increase our parking space and have double yellow lines put on the road to help prevent nuisance parking.

“In addition, SSE constantly encourages employees to car share, travel on our free minibus service from Perth Railway Station or undertake more sustainable forms of transport such as walking or cycling.”
