Prince Charles to promote tartan culture

- Rachel Clark

HRH Prince Charles has been appointed as the royal patron for a Highland Perthshire-based organisation.

The Scottish Tartans Authority based in Pitlochry, has appointed the Duke of Rothesay as its new patron, to help promote, protect and preserve Scotland’s iconic national cloth.

The authority looks to promote and educate members of the public worldwide about different Scottish tartans and Highland dress, as well as their origins, manufacture, use and development.

Some of the recent work of the Highland Perthshire authority has included developing a Highland Games exhibition with the Braemar Royal Highland Society, and working with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on their 2017 theme, a‘splash of tartan’.

John McLeish, chairman of The Scottish Tartans Authority, said he considers the royal appointment a“great honour”.

He said:“The rich history and cultural traditions associated with tartan help to attract millions of visitors to Scotland every year. Whether on the catwalks of Milan or at a Highland gathering, our iconic national cloth has a distinct style and evokes strong feelings of belonging, making it the best-known and best-loved fabric in the world.

“The Duke of Rothesay is a true ambassador for tartan, Highland dress and the traditions of the Highlands. We consider it a great honour that His Royal Highness has agreed to become our patron and we are very grateful for his support and encouragement as we seek to enhance the profile of tartan and secure its legacy for future generations.”

HRH Prince Charles will now take up the position to promote the culture and history of Scottish tartan.
