Warning after cat poisoned

Moggy is left near death

- Lynn Duke

The full extent of the damage to Angus is not yet known Perthshire pet owners are being urged to be on their guard after a cat nearly died from suspected poisoning.

An Aberuthven resident, who does not wish to be named for fear it was a deliberate act, has told how she found her 11month-old cat Angus in a distressed state.

She explained: “He started to meow a lot - and not like a normal meow in the early hours of Sunday morning. At first we thought he was in season. When we got up there was a dramatic change in him - he was drooling, his third eyelids were over and he was unable to get onto the couch. It was like he was trying but nothing was happening.”

Angus was rushed to the vet, where he ended up on a drip.

Angus’s owner continued: “Originally the vet thought antifreeze was the poison due to the time of the year but normally they pass crystals in the urine which he hasn’t so I am not 100 per cent sure what he has had. I have other cats and I’m fearful for them. One hasn’t been home in five days.

“Angus was so distressed and changed from the sooky cat he is to being too scared to let anyone touch. We were the only ones he would let touch him when we visited.”

Thankfully Angus was at home when he took ill and was able to be taken to the vets quickly but the extent of the damage is still not known and he won’t be allowed back home until the vets are satisfied his kidneys are working properly.

His owner added: “He is doing a lot better although it’s been touch and go. The vet is thankful but surprised he has survived.

“Angus’s tail was also damaged and the vet thought it looked like it had been hurt with force and he wouldn’t let anyone near his back end.”

The resident has been warning others and has since heard of other cases.

She added: “I have heard of another lady whose cat has had a tail injury and Cats Protection have informed me that another lady whose cat passed away had called them and thought it was deliberate to her cat too.

“For this to be accidental would be bad enough but to be deliberate is shocking and disturbing. My animals are my life. I have dogs, horses and cats but I’m also a student so the vet bill is another factor stressing me out as I’m sure it will be high up in the hundreds.

“I worry for dog walkers and the kids of Aberuthven as if this was a cruel act there is a nasty, evil individual in our village.”
