Home win a massive lift for Saints

-

St Johnstone’s home form was never a concern for midfielder Blair Alston.

But the 25-year-old admits bagging a first win at McDiarmid Park since September does get the monkey off their backs.

And Alston now wants to piece together a positive run of form on home soil following the victory against Ross County.

Rangers make the trip to Perth tonight and Alston said:“The home form was probably more of a concern for the fans.

“Obviously, at home, fans want to turn up and see the team doing well.

“We weren’t for a long time but for us it was about picking up points.

“The best thing now is that it’s off the back and people are not talking about how ever many months it has been.

“Hopefully we can use Saturday to build on and pick up more points at home.

“When we play the bigger clubs, people say you don’t have much of a chance. But we have always done well in the past.

“After the past two weeks we know that we have nothing to fear because we know we can perform against teams.

“Rangers will come here expecting to turn us over but that works well for us. Nothing needs to change for us.

“We need to make sure we are solid, hard to break down and then take our chances when they come.

“At Ibrox we did well going forward. On Tuesday we will need to battle hard and work together.”

Alston, who played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s win against County, was encouraged by his personal and the team’s performance.

He explained:“We said before Celtic that we needed to become

solid and get back to what we are good at. Two clean sheets in a row is good for us. We got the two goals on Saturday but we probably should have scored more.

“Even after the first 10 or 15 minutes, the fans were behind us which helps massively.

“They could see that we were putting in the effort and trying to make something happen. Scoring two in the first half makes things easier.

“Against Celtic, for me, it was a lot more defensive and about trying to stop them.

“But the weekend was about us going forward. I will get better in the final third and create more chances but it was good to get 90 minutes.”
