Hotel’s groundskeepers come to the rescue of woman snowed in for five days

- Ross Gardiner

A Strathallan woman has thanked Gleneagles hotel for rescuing her from the snow after being stuck inside for FIVE DAYS.

Sheila Thomson, of Gleneagles village, was left stuck in the house after last week’s red weather warning struck Perthshire, leaving the southern-most parts of the region submerged in snow.

And after Sheila’s supermarket delivery was cancelled due to the weather, she thought she would be stranded without food.

However, after phoning up neighbouring Gleneagles Hotel, the grounds keeping staff rushed to the rescue to dig Sheila out.

She told the Perthshire Advertiser:“I was desperate so I phoned up Gleneagles and they sent the groundsmen over in less than 15 minutes.

“When my delivery was cancelled, I worried about how I was going to get food. But the two men dug me out in less than 45 minutes so I was able to go to Auchterarder to pick up supplies.

“Gleneagles village always gets lots of snowdrift, but these guys didn’t have to come out. I thought it was a really nice thing to do.

“It was bitterly cold and they left before I could give them anything for helping me.”

Conor O’Leary, Gleneagles’General Manager, said:“We expected the‘Beast from the East’to bring wintry conditions last week, but the volume of snow we experienced in the end took everyone by surprise.

“We love being a part of the local community and being able to help our neighbours whenever we can.

“Our groundskeepers are used to working in all conditions and have tractors and shovels on hand, so we were delighted to be able to send a couple from the team to assist Mrs Thomson in clearing her car and driveway, as well as all the main footpaths and roads around the estate.” Gleneagles groundsmen came to rescue Sheila after she was snowed in
