Charities win places on awards shortlist

RASAC team members Perth Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (RASAC) and Perth YMCA have been nominated for Scotland’s National Youth Work Awards.

RASAC youth ambassador­s have been shortliste­d for the national community youth work award.

A group of 23 young people are challengin­g the norms around sexual violence and gender inequality.

The RASAC youth initiative encourages young men and women to be part of the solution through their youth ambassador programme.

Youth workers have equipped young ambassador­s with the knowledge and skills to raise awareness in schools and the wider community.

Their work as part of the initiative is now integral in schools throughout Perth and Kinross.

A number of the young ambassador­s have been involved in focus groups for agencies like the NHS. Perth and District YMCA They have been part of the young people’s child exploitati­on advisory group and have developed recommenda­tions for the Children’s Commission­er.

This work also gave them the opportunit­y to take part in conference­s in Paris and Helsinki.

Perth and District YMCA are one of three finalists for the national youth work team of the year.

Their 10-strong staff team and 65 volunteers have worked together to support 287 young people over the last year.

This small team run five youth committees across Perthshire, partnering with churches to make sure local youth work is youth-led.

They have worked with local businesses to bring in financial and in-kind support for the service and integrated youth work into schools, community projects and Perth Prison.

Each staff member also sits on a community partnershi­p, helping young people in the region to have a say on the things that matter to them.
