Coupar Angus

Abbey Church Services on Sunday, March 4, held at Bendochy Church and Coupar Angus, were conducted by Rev Andy Graham and continued to explore the ‘beatitudes’. We should be ardent ambassadors for Jesus, expecting to sometimes suffer abuse; in his opening prayer Andy asked for those gathered to be given strength if they were mocked because they follow Jesus. His children’s address reminded children of all ages that their mothers are/were unstinting in their care for children without any regard or expectation of being rewarded, which is how Jesus conducted his life while on this earth. The Bible readings from Corinthians chapter 9, verses 19 to 23 and Mark chapter 1, verses 29 to 39 and were read at Bendochy by Jane Davidson and by Catriona Henderson at the Abbey. In the first reading Paul informs “I am a free man, nobody’s slave; but I make myself everybody’s slave in order to win as many people as possible”. The second reading reminded the congregation how Jesus had travelled all over Galilee teaching and healing all who came to him. The message continued in the sermon. Jesus is with us all the way and will lift us up when needed. It is not easy to take a stand against wrong doings. What would Jesus do? We must take up the cross and if we suffer, accept the consequences. We are not here to receive but to serve. The love of Jesus and the Gospel is all we need. In our service of ‘Him’ we will receive blessings in abundance. Our blessings come from God himself, as spelled out in the ‘beatitudes’. The line in the hymn, ‘I want to walk with Jesus’ “My life must show that he lives in me” summed it up nicely. Additional music played by organist and choir master Austin Wilkie was I Giorni by Ludovico Einiaudi on piano; Theme from New World Symphony by Dvorak and Recessional Voluntary in D by T. Pattison. Rev Graham is on annual leave until March 14 inclusive. Anyone in need of pastoral care during that time should contact Rev Bill Ewart on 01250 876897. On Sunday, the services at Bendochy and in the Abbey will be led by Rosemary Patterson. The Abbey Kirk Session will meet on Wednesday, March 14, at 7.30pm in the church.
