Ian targets season on the shale

-

Perthshire stock car driver Ian McLaughlin is planning to steer his way to success on the world stage.

The Auchterarder track ace is gearing up for another important Racewall season as he targets further saloon glory.

McLaughlin was named Saloon Stock Cars champion at the Cowdenbeath circuit for the 2017 season.

And, as the new season gets set to rev into action this weekend, his hopes are high for another memorable year.

McLaughlin said:“I am planning to race mostly at the Racewall but if possible, and if time permits, I would like to race a bit more often in England.

“I need to get more competitive on shale and to get as many world ranking points as possible.

“I was first introduced to stock car racing by my parents who were keen spectators and we would go to Cowdenbeath on a weekly basis.

“My dad was mechanic for my uncles Neil and William McLaughlin, who both raced saloons.

“My first ever run at the Racewall ended after I hit one of the infield posts – that was when they had the infield fence.”

McLaughlin’s fortunes have certainly improved since then - and he admits his continued success would not be possible without friends and family.

“Without the help and encouragement from my mum, Agnes, and dad, John, I couldn’t have raced,” McLaughlin said.

“Any success that I have achieved

Ian McLaughlin wouldn’t have been possible without them.

“Also the rest of the team. Gary, Fraser, Neil and Victoria, the newest additions to the team, Molly and William and Ross McLaughlin of microf2 fame.

“My sponsorship comes from W McLaughlin and Sons, RS Coaches, G West Farriers, Griffen Bodyshop, Tullibardine Smithy, Norco, Paul Meldrum Removals, K West hairdressing and A9 Autoservices, which is the business I started in 2014.

“Without the mechanics and sponsorship I wouldn’t be as competitive as I am. It is really appreciated.”

Racewall organisers were hopeful that the first meet of the season on Saturday will go ahead despite recent heavy snowfall.

The final practice session was wiped out by the Beast from the East last weekend but a number of Perthshire drivers are ready for action.

There will be at least three new formula II drivers at the Racewall this season, including Peter Watt of Blairgowrie.

Perth drivers Pete and Chris Davidson will be keen to get off to a strong start and pick up positive results early in the season.

The saloons will again prove to be an exciting class as McLaughlin attempts to regain his track points title.

In the Scottish ORCi stock rod category, Craig Tosh, from Glenalmond, has a new car at his disposal and is set to impress this term.

The season is scheduled to begin this Saturday. It will be a 6pm start at Central Park, Cowdenbeath, weather permitting.
