Duncan determined to boost the Eagles

Clow’s quest to send Perthshire to league safety

- Matthew Gallagher

Duncan Clow admits the stopstart nature of this season has been frustrating for Perthshire.

But the Eagles’ number eight is planning to build momentum and help steer the North Inch men to BT National League Division 3 safety.

Shire’s trip to Orkney was wiped out by the Beast from the East last week as Clow now hopes to kick-up a storm of his own against Gordonians in Aberdeen.

The Perth squad travel to the north east on Saturday and Clow said: “It’s definitely been frustrating with games being called off.

“We’re now playing every weekend until April, and then the rescheduled Orkney fixture a week after we go on tour.

“That can then eat into the 7s season for some players, though hopefully, those days are behind me.

“Cancelled games due to the weather, coupled with the Six Nations weekends, means it can be difficult to get a run of games.

“I think most seasons have ended up finishing in April, so you just get used to it.

“If you added a winter break, chances are those weekends you had off would end up playable anyway.

“Another victory would certainly make our position safer, though I have hopes of a couple victories before the end of the season.”

Shire were thumped 17-66 on home soil against Gordonians earlier in the campaign. Clow wants to drive Shire across the safety line this season

Clow, however, is determined to turn fortunes this time around.

He said: “Gordonians had a couple of strong carriers in the backline last time, and they moved the ball around well.

“That was the first game of the season though, so it’ll be a different game this time around.

“We’ve worked a lot on our defensive structures, and I think we can take them up front.”

Recent heavy snowfall has subsided and, with pitches across the country recovering, Clow is expecting this weekend’s game to get the nod.

“I’m sure the game against Gordonians will be on,” he told the PA. “It’s important that you prepare yourself mentally during the week, for a game at the weekend.

“It’s cost us before thinking a game will be called off, so you have to stay focused and on track.”

Shire make the trip to Aberdeen without captain Adam Pattinson.
