Battle site assessment complete
Murdo Fraser MSP wants to see the results of the assessment The Scottish Government has completed an archeological assessment of the Killiecrankie battle site as part of the A9 dualling project.
And it has now been challenged to make the findings of the report public.
Campaigners have warned against dualling the A9 through the historical battlefield and have repeatedly called on Transport Scotland to alter their plans. In an answer to a parliamentary question from Mid-Scotland Fife MSP Murdo Fraser, infrastructure minister Keith Brown said the assessment had been completed last month.
Mr Fraser now wants to know what they found and has set his sights on debating the issue in parliament.
He said: “There are real and legitimate concerns over the extent and quality of these archaeological excavations and it’s important that the Scottish Government releases this information.
“Following today’s response I have submitted a supplementary question calling on the government to make public the full findings from these archaeological digs.”
Mr Fraser added: “Campaigners are rightfully worried that lasting damage to the battlefield is happening without due care and attention. People in the area recognise that part of the battlefield may be lost to the new road.
“But if this is to happen, the process must be rigorous and transparent to ensure that our history is preserved.
“I want a debate in parliament on the dualling process but this won’t happen without cross party backing and I would call on fellow MSPs to sign my motion to guarantee a fair and robust process.”
