Prestigious prizes for talented pupils
Abernethy Primary wins for choreography and Kinross High does well
Talented kids at a Perthshire primary school are celebrating after winning a prestigious choreography competition.
Abernethy Primary School won the Tayside heats of Rock Challenge UK’s J-Rock competition at the Caird Hall in Dundee on Wednesday, March 14.
The competition, which is designed to keep children off drugs and alcohol by instead getting them interested in dance, drama and music, saw the Abernethy children re-create the story of the three witches of Abernethy, and how the village had to use the help of the woodland creatures to overcome the three sorcerers.
Judith Tait, a parent of two of the pupils in the Abernethy troupe, said the children couldn’t believe it when they found out they had won. She said: “We are extremely proud of their performance, we couldn’t believe it when our names were read out!
“The kids were so chuffed, especially considering we only had eight weeks to pull it all together. We couldn’t believe it.
“Abernethy put forward a performance and we ended up winning. We worked with a local choreographer called Jack Simpson, who has done the Rock Challenge before at secondary school.
“The pupils were from primary three to primary seven, and we all had to do our own costumes and our own fundraising.
“We really wanted to show our local area Abernethy, so the story was about the myth of the three witches of Abernethy and how the village had to overcome them with the help of the creatures of the forest.”
The judges marked Abernethy Primary School nine out of ten for their story, which saw them win the overall Tayside junior title.
Abernethy also won awards for their performance skill, concept, drama, soundtrack, set design, costume design and overall entertainment.
Kinross’ primary and high school also took part, with Kinross High School coming second in the secondary school competition.
Kinross High School picked up awards for choreography, performance skill, concept, drama, sountrack, lighting and video performance. They also won the award for demonstrating
