Scone Scouts ready for Hut launch

- Ross Gardiner

Scouts in Scone are preparing for the official unveiling of their revamped home.

The village’s Scout Hut, located at Catmoor Road in Scone, just behind the library, has undergone a major facelift and will reopen at a special ceremony on Saturday, March 24.

Volunteer Jack Welch told the PA: “Effectively, the Scout Hut has been in place for 40 years and was in very poor condition. There was damp and mould on the walls.

“There are lots of groups that meet there. There’s a strong group of Scouts, Cubs and Beavers and now there are Guides. A number of people from these groups established a fundraising group led by Mark Beveridge. We began fundraising about a year ago and the hut is now newly completed. The final part, a new roof was installed at the weekend.

“We’re delighted to have now secured the next 40 years for the groups who use the Hut.

“Altogether, we raised around £60,000, which is a lot for a relatively small group. It was a great effort and we had a lot of support from the Gannochy Trust. It has been a real community effort and a real team effort. We outsourced the work to local tradespeople and we’ve totally transformed it. Hopefully now, we can rent the hall out for a bit of extra revenue.”

The opening will include Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Guides who currently use the hall and previous members of the group who have great memories of their time in the Scouting movement.
