Top fiddle band set to blaze a trail to Fair City

20th anniversary gig

- Rachel Clark

One of the most celebrated fiddle bands in Scotland will be stopping off in Perth later this year.

Blazin’ Fiddles will celebrate their 20th anniversary at Perth Concert Hall with special guest vocalist Karen Matheson on Saturday, September 1

Each member of the Blazin’ Fiddles has their own distinct flavour from each part of the Highlands and Islands to bring to the band, blending solo and ensemble sets.

Jenna Reid, Bruce MacGregor, Rua Macmillan and Kristan Harvey will be leading the fiddles, with Anna Massie on guitar and Angus Lyon on piano, promising an exciting night of music.

Bruce MacGregor, who founded the band, said: “I still pinch myself we’re at 20 years. It was only meant to last for four concerts back in 1998 but here we are 20 years later still going strong.

“I can’t wait to take this special show on the road and to have Karen Matheson perform alongside us will be fantastic. When the band started it was out of a desire to showcase the Scottish fiddle, in all its guises.

“We drew on influences from all of the fiddle playing regions of Scotland and put these together in one band –this is why for us, in our 20th year, it is so important to tour Scotland and bring our music to as many areas of the country as we can.

“We can’t wait to see fans old and new at Perth Concert Hall.”

Karen Matheson is already a celebrated vocal performer with her band Capercaillie, and has sold over one million albums including the music for the Hollywood blockbuster Rob Roy.

She can’t wait to join the Blazin’ Fiddles on tour and said: “The Blazin’ Fiddles are a national treasure. It’s an absolute honour to be going on the road with them.

“I was delighted when Bruce asked me, especially as I love playing these venues. I look forward to seeing as many faces as possible later this year.”

Blazin’ Fiddles with Karen Matheson will be in the Fair City on Saturday, September 1. Tickets go on sale shortly online via Ticketmaster. Blazin’Fiddles will perform with Karen Matheson
