Perth stop for top children’s show

- Staff reporter

The world premiere of a top children’s theatre show is coming to Perth later this spring.

As part of the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival tour programme,‘BabaYaga’ will be staged at Perth Theatre on Wednesday, May 9 and Thursday, May 10, before the festival opens in the capital at the end of the month.

The new show, designed specifically for children and their families, was created and is performed by a team of unique artists from all over the world, including Shona Reppe from Scotland, and Christine Johnston and Rosemary Myers from Australia.

Baba Yaga is a “hilarious”musical re-telling of an old Russian folktale. The show features Vaselina, a young woman living quietly and safely tucked away on the third floor of a very tall apartment block.

However, Vaselina is forced to confront the terrifying Baba Yaga, who plays her music far too loudly and even eats jellybeans with her mouth open.

In Slavic and Russian mythology, Baba Yaga is a supernatural being who is ferocious and deformed, flying around deep in the forest to hinder those walking through the woods.

Noel Jordan, director of the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, said:“The combination of Shona Reppe, Christine Johnston and Rosemary Myers is thrilling.

“These are some of the best female artists creating work for young people today and Baba Yaga is a wonderful new collaboration full of humour and intrigue, guaranteed to inspire and entertain young minds.”

Baba Yaga is suitable for children between the ages of seven and 12 and will be staged in Perth Theatre.

Tickets cost £7.50, concessions £5, from the Horsecross box office on 01738 621031. Baba Yaga is coming to Perth
