Vandals slammed for trashing trees

Playpark damage

- Paul Cargill

Vandals are snapping and damaging newlyplanted trees at a playpark in Perth.

People living near the park off Argyll Road, which was only completed last year, pinned the blame on school pupils walking past it on the way to the local shops at lunchtime.

Children from North Muirton Primary School planted the trees along the footpaths around the park just over a week ago but already a number have been destroyed or bent out of shape.

One dog walker taking a stroll around the park this Tuesday said the damage had definitely been done by Perth Grammar School pupils making their way to the shops to buy their lunches.

“Somebody spotted them with the trees. They were waving them about,” he said. “There’s a couple of them bent over as well.

“It’s a shame. They were only put in last Tuesday.”

The vandals were also blasted on social media, with one local saying: “Total disgrace. I seen a boy pulling out a plant. I seen red and made him plant it back. I got a mouthful but he did it. This was lunchtime.”

Another said: “That’s awful. I was at the park for the first time on Tuesday with my granddaughter and she loved it. Super park. We were speaking to the workmen as they were about to plant the tree. So sad people feel the need to do this to a great park.”

Another added: “It’s the school kids. I was at the park on Monday and my little boy and my little sisters and brothers couldn’t even have a good play at the park as the kids were sitting in the climbing frame and shouting and swearing.

“I couldn’t keep my mouth shut and said that they shouldn’t be swearing in the kids play park and specially not around five kids all under the age of five. All I got was a load of cheek from them.”

Localcouncillor Chris Ahern thanked the children from North Muirton Primary School for their efforts in planting the trees.

And he hit out at the vandals, saying: “It’s disappointing. Kids just have no respect these days.”

A PKC spokesperson said this week: “The council’s community wardens regularly patrol North Muirton.

“While the vast majority of young people don’t engage in anti-social behaviour, there is a small minority that do so we work closely with local schools and Police Scotland to address this.”
